Which dog breeds actually cope with a Karachi or Lahore summer?

Somebody buys a Husky in December. It is beautiful until May. By June it is lying on the bathroom floor, panting, losing weight, and the family is quietly looking for someone to take it.

Heat is the thing to get right here, and two features decide most of it: a short muzzle and a thick double coat. Panting is a dog's only air conditioner, and a flat face is a bad radiator.

Which dogs have you taken through a full summer, and in which city? Karachi humidity and Multan dry heat are not the same problem, so please say. The ones that surprised you by coping are worth hearing about too.

Desi. Not being funny — it is the actual answer and everyone skips past it because it is free.

Peshawar here. Beagle has been fine, but Peshawar dry heat is a different animal to Karachi. I would not put money on the same dog coping in that humidity.

Karachi. Do NOT buy a Husky. I say this as someone who has taken in two of them from families who bought them in winter and gave up in June. Both had skin infections from being shaved, which is the other thing people do wrong when they panic.

"Short muzzle is the disqualifier" is the sentence I was trying to write when I posted this. Marking this as the answer.

Faisalabad. Two things that surprised me:

Golden Retriever did much better than I expected, but only because the previous owner had kept it lean. A fat Golden would be a different story.

And a Rottweiler I fostered was genuinely bad in heat despite the short coat — black absorbs, and he was a big heavy dog. Coat length is not the whole picture.

Bully Kutta / Pakistani Mastiff. Built here, been here for generations, handles the heat better than anything imported. But it is a serious dog and not a first dog, so I am not exactly recommending it to the person asking this question.

Late to this but worth adding for anyone reading it next summer: check the pavement with the back of your hand before an evening walk. Islamabad tarmac at 7pm is still hot enough to blister pads well after the air has cooled. I learned that the expensive way.
