Crate training in Pakistan — useful, or unnecessary here?

Standard advice in the West, cold reception here, usually as "why would I lock my dog in a cage".

The argument for it is that a crate makes a dog easy to confine after surgery, easy to transport, and much faster to toilet-train. The argument against is that most homes here already give the dog a corner it treats as its own.

Has anyone actually done it? Did it help, and where did you find a crate the right size?

Did it, would do it again, and the reason had nothing to do with training. She needed a spay and then an unrelated stitch-up two years later, and both times "confine the dog for ten days" was a non-event because the crate was already her favourite place. Families who have to improvise that after surgery have a miserable fortnight.

Never used one. Dog has a charpai in the corner that is his and nobody sits on it. Same function, no cage, no argument with my mother.

Both can be true. The crate is not magic, the predictable safe space is the magic. A crate is just the version you can put in a car.

On sourcing — I could not find a decent large one and ended up getting a welder in Islamabad to make a collapsible one for about 8,000. Heavier than an imported one but it will outlive me.

The car point is a good one that I had not weighed. Ours travels twice a year and it is currently a loose dog in a moving vehicle, which now that I type it out is obviously stupid.
