There are far more animals on the street than there are homes, and the ones that get adopted are nearly always adopted by somebody who was not looking for a pet that day.

She turned up on the boundary wall in the middle of a downpour, walked in, sat on my laptop, and never left. That was 2021. I have never once felt like I chose her.
Outside my shop in Gulshan. Puppy, about eight weeks, clearly not going to last the week. I told myself I would find him a home. That was three years ago and he is asleep under the counter right now.
Found a kitten in the engine bay of my car in December. Genuinely in the engine bay. He is now eleven kilos and sleeps on my chest.
Mine was a road accident case. Back leg broken, about a year old, on Ferozepur Road. I only stopped because the traffic had stopped.
Rs 34,000 and eleven weeks of cage rest later, she walks with a limp when it is cold and is otherwise completely fine. She is the most affectionate animal I have ever had and I do not think that is a coincidence — I think she knows.
For anyone in the same position wondering whether to stop: the vet bill was much less than I feared and the leg healed better than anyone expected. Do not assume it is hopeless because it looks terrible.

On the second half of my question — please, if you know a group actually functioning in your city, do post them. I would rather this thread turned into a list of who is genuinely operating than a list of who has a nice Instagram, so: only if you have personally dealt with them, and please say what you dealt with them for. Fostering, TNR, medical, transport — most groups are good at one thing and stretched on everything else.
And a plea from the other side: if you are adopting, please answer the messages. We do home checks and follow-ups and about half the people who fill in a form vanish. Every one of those is a foster place we held open.
Adding something people find out too late: a street cat or dog that is used to being outside does not always settle into a flat, and that is not a failure on anyone's part. Ask the rescue how the animal has been living. An adult street dog going into a third-floor apartment is a much bigger adjustment than people expect.
Adopted a desi kitten in March after reading this thread. Cost me a spay, vaccinations and a fortnight of hiding under the bed. She is the easiest animal I have ever kept, and I say that having spent 45,000 on a Persian.
